Experimental Background

It boasts a globally leading plant bioreactor technology platform. Through its pioneering OryzHiExp rice endosperm cell protein expression platform, researchers have successfully cultivated a unique variety of rice that naturally synthesizes human serum albumin via photosynthesis during its growth—and stores this vital protein directly within the rice grains. Once the rice matures, a specialized extraction and purification process yields human serum albumin with a purity level exceeding 99.9999%. This technology, dubbed "Rice-Based Hematopoiesis," has achieved the world's highest yield, producing approximately 10 grams of serum albumin from just 1 kilogram of rice. 。

The production line capable of manufacturing 1 million vials of plant-derived recombinant human serum albumin injection per year officially began operations in 2023. Its core product, HY1001 (plant-derived recombinant human serum albumin injection), a Class 1 innovative drug, has successfully completed Phase III clinical trials. Study results indicate that it has met the pre-specified primary and secondary clinical endpoints, demonstrating excellent safety profiles.

On July 18, 2025, Wuheyuan Bio's independently developed recombinant human albumin injection (produced in rice) received approval from the National Medical Products Administration for market launch, making it the world's first recombinant protein drug produced using a rice endosperm cell expression system.
